Support for the cost-of-living squeeze

Over the last couple of months, many of you will have been getting those dreaded letters that your bills are increasing. We have seen that energy bills are sometimes doubling or even more, for people across the country.

Beyond energy prices, inflation is rising, and cost increases will be felt from many directions. Fuel, food, taxes and rent all look set to go up in the coming twelve months.

The cost increases will be felt by us all, and currently the government has so far provided precious little support. We want to see the government do more to help ordinary working people through this cost of living crisis. The Chancellor recently wrote off billions of pounds of money that was stolen during the Coronavirus by fraudsters, yet they won’t take action to support the hard working people who need it most.

Community will remain in our members corner as we go through this difficult time together.

We will be raising up your voices at every turn calling on the government to work with us on ways to maintain and improve living standards through this difficult time.

In your workplaces, we will be continuing to negotiate for increases in pay, and improvements to workplace terms and conditions. We have already secured pay increases for our members such as at the British Footwear Association and Sodexo.

Employers have a responsibility and duty of care to their workforce to ensure that those who give them their time and dedicated are fairly rewarded and can live safe and happy lives outside the workplace.

As a union we provide extensive financial support and discounts for all our members, to make your money go a little bit further. This includes for everyday needs such as groceries and household items to personal services such as clothes shopping, gym memberships and streaming services. Log into the members area to access discounts and savings here.

Community members also have access to Capital Credit Union, to further support their financial security. The various banking services they provide includes savings accounts, loans and mortgages. You can find more information here.

We know the coming weeks and months will be difficult for many of us, and the inability of the government to step in further compounds the frustration. Your union will remain in your corner and support our members in the light industries every step of the way.
