Driver Care Plus

Community is encouraging members in the logistics sector to sign up to the union’s expanded Driver Care Plus Package.

This member benefit, which is now available to all LGV, HGV and PSV Vocational drivers up to the age of 67, provides policy holders with up to £10,000 worth of cover in the event of their licence being permanently revoked due to injury, illness or disability. Driver Care Plus also provides union members with legal representation and advice against prosecution for Road Traffic Offences incurred whilst driving an official vehicle on duty.

Tony Dunne, Community Union’s National Officer for the Logistics sector, said:

“Working as an LGV, HGV or PSV driver is both rewarding and challenging, and like other transit-based roles comes with occupational risks that are outside of our control, including accidental injury or, sadly, assault. Unforeseen changes in physical or mental health over time can also impact a driver’s ability to perform the job.

“The Driver Care Plus package is there to ensure that our members in the logistics sector are protected in those instances, and assures them that there is someone in their corner when things don’t go to plan.”

David Weeks, Community’s Regional Secretary for London and the South, said:

“As a union we are very proud of our Driver Care Plus offer, and I know colleagues in the logistics sector have benefitted greatly from it over the years. Whilst the prospect of ever losing a license is something no driver wants to contemplate, signing up to Driver Care Plus affords some peace of mind to members.

“The extension of the Driver Care Plus package from members aged 65 and under to members aged 67 was agreed following discussions with our members in the sector, and ensures that even more drivers will now be able to benefit from the cover provided.”

Community members can now sign up to the package for just £3.53 a week, or £15.29 a month, inclusive of their ordinary union membership fee.
