Community is proud to announce Steven McGurk as our new President.
Steven has been an active member of the union for nearly 20 years, serving as a workplace rep for over a decade and sitting on Community’s NEC as a representative for disabled members over the last 6 years.
Steven is Vice-Chair of the National League of the Blind and Disabled (NLBD) National Committee . As part of that role, he has represented our members at the TUC and STUC disabled workers conferences, and currently sits on the TUC Disabled Workers Committee.
As Community’s branch secretary at RSBi in Glasgow, the largest supported employment business of its kind in Europe, Steven works closely with our Union Learning Rep to provide practical work experience opportunities to young students from Additional Support for Learning (ASL) schools across the city. He has forged strong working relationships with local colleges to support students looking to complete qualifications in manufacturing operations, and has been proud to see many of these young people gain meaningful employment or trade apprenticeships with RSBi and City Building Glasgow.
In the 125th year of the NLBD, we are immensely proud that one of the section’s most prominent campaigners will take on our union’s presidency. As Community’s President, we know that Steven will continue to champion the voices of disabled workers and challenge inequalities in our workplaces and society.
