Campaigning on the menopause

Community was proud to present our work on menopause policies at an equalities workshop for European trade unions organised by IndustriAll, a federation of 180 national trade union affiliates in 38 European countries, collectively representing 7 million working people.

Anna Mowbray and Maya Ilany of Community’s Research, Policy and Politics team presented our menopause campaign to officers from European trade unions. In their presentation, they highlighted the issues menopausal women currently face in workplaces across industries, and the union’s strategy for securing effective menopause policy in all industries.

At Community we recognise that while the menopause’s symptoms usually impact women between 45 and 55 years of age, it also indirectly impacts their families, colleagues and communities. We also note that not all people who go through the menopause are women: some are from non-binary or transgender communities. Indeed, it is clear that menopause is not “just” a women’s issue, it is also a workplace issue – which makes it a trade union issue.

That is why we are organising members across industries and workplaces, developing resources and campaign tools, as well as working with good employers to develop impactful menopause policies for their workplaces that make a real difference in members’ lives.
