Community welcomes the election of Vaughan Gething as the new leader of Welsh Labour and Wales’ fifth First Minister.
We also pay tribute to Jeremy Miles on his well-fought campaign. This was a contest between two high-calibre candidates with positive visions for Wales’ future. We know that Jeremy will continue to play an important and active role in Welsh political life.
Vaughan is a Community member and a proud trade unionist with a lifelong record of standing up for working people across different sectors. He has been a steadfast supporter of our members in the steel industry over many years, and spoke at our recent rallies in support of steel jobs in Port Talbot and Newport.
His strong record of public service and leadership – whether as the youngest-ever President of the Wales TUC, or an effective and experienced Welsh Government minister – make him an ideal candidate for his new role.
Vaughan’s election as Wales, Britain and Europe’s first black leader is also a moment of real historic significance. We hope that his election will inspire others from under-represented communities to consider standing for political office.
We look forward to working with Vaughan to support the interests of our members across Wales, and we will be standing alongside him as he leads the fight in Wales at a must-win general election. Working alongside a UK Labour Government led by Keir Starmer, a Vaughan Gething-led Welsh Government will serve as a strong and dynamic voice for working people across Wales.
