Update on exams in Wales

Voice Community (the education and early years section of Community Union) has welcomed the announcement by Education Minister Kirsty Williams (Tuesday 10 November 2020) that there will be no end of year exams for learners taking GCSEs, AS levels or A levels.

Urtha Felda, Senior Professional Officer Wales / Uwch Swyddog Proffesiynol Cymru with Voice Community Cymru, said:

“Voice Community Cymru welcomes the end to the uncertainty, and the sensible decision not to proceed with exams in 2021.

“We are pleased that the wellbeing of learners and ensuring fairness across the system were central in the Welsh Government’s decision-making process.

“Our members will naturally be concerned about the increase in workload associated with the proposed teacher-managed assessments, particularly in the current climate of disrupted education and learning. However, we are reassured by the Minister’s commitment to work with teachers, schools and colleges to take these plans forward.

“We will need to see more details of what is proposed, and will work with the Welsh Government on behalf of our members to develop the new system.”
