Commenting on Ofsted’s review of sexual abuse in schools and colleges, Deborah Lawson, Assistant General Secretary of Community Union (Voice education section) said:
“Ofsted’s report is of great concern.
“Nobody should feel unsafe or threatened in school or college because they are subjected to abuse or inappropriate behaviour, wherever it takes place.
“School staff need to be supported to deal with these challenging and disturbing issues, and receive appropriate training.
“They also need to know who the safeguarding lead is in their school, and that any concerns they raise will be dealt with appropriately.
“The training announced today is a start, but these issues must be tackled by society as a whole. Culture change will only come when everyone accepts responsibility – from government through to social media companies.”
