Community Union is aware of speculation in the press today regarding talks between the UK Government and Tata Steel. A Sky News article published this morning indicated that progress was being made on a £500million government investment – matched by £700m in capital expenditure from Tata – to transition Port Talbot steelworks towards an electric arc model. The article indicates that such a move could see 3000 of Tata’s British-based staff lose their jobs.
A spokesperson for Community, the steelworkers’ union, said:
“We remain in discussions with the company and the unions have not agreed any decarbonisation strategy for Port Talbot. We continue to support a solution that will maintain blast furnace production and safeguard the future for all the UK plants. We are ready to use all means at our disposal to protect jobs and our vital strategic industry.”
Community is the steelworkers’ union. More steelworkers are members of Community than any other union. We have a history dating back over a century, representing members and campaigning to protect Britain’s steel industry. We are a modern trade union, campaigning for a better working world.
