Not meeting the scale of the crisis

Today, the Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a new package of measures to support with the cost-of-living crisis. These include energy grants, to be funded in part by a windfall tax on energy companies.

It is thanks to the hard work and ongoing campaigns of trade unions and activists that the Chancellor was forced to introduce these measures.

Yet these plans do not go far enough to meet the scale of this crisis. Working people already face sky high energy prices, and real term pay cuts due to inflation.  For many, this means having to choose between heating and eating. It’s shameful our Government has had to be dragged to introduce support for millions of working people.

We will continue to advocate for the change and support our members need, and fight for better pay in their workplaces. We, alongside the rest of the trade union movement, will be joining the TUC’s #DemandBetter demonstration on June 18th, details of which can be found here.
