No money, no new ideas

In response to the Government’s levelling up white paper announcement, Kate Dearden, Head of Research, Policy and External Relations at Community, said:

“After twelve years of Conservative government, our members have seen living standards falling and inequality rising. Real pay has decreased, town centres are declining, and Brexit is devastating trade.

Community has always fought for working people to ensure that they are able to prosper, not just survive. Working people across the country are long-overdue a serious levelling up plan: one that invests in their communities, and ensures they are empowered to face the challenges of the future. This white paper falls far short of delivering that.

We are particularly disappointed to see a total absence of support for the steel industry, a key strategic industry that supports supply chains for vital sectors of our economy, and a key employer providing highly skilled and well paid jobs in communities that heavily rely on them. This failure threatens our ability to build a sustainable and prosperous future across the UK.”
