Less jokes, more change

Today, Boris Johnson delivered the closing speech to Conservative Party Conference.

The trade union Community says:

“The Prime Minister needs to deliver more than just warm words and telling jokes. Instead, he should focus on delivering actual results and change for working people in this country.

The speech Boris Johnson made today promised to Build Back Better, yet there was no mention of a new employment bill to protect the workers who have pulled us all through the pandemic. No mention of extending sick pay to all, no mention of outlawing fire-and-rehire or extending employment rights for those in precarious work.

The Prime Minister said that science and innovation were the solutions to the climate crisis, yet there was also no mention of investment in our steel industry. This is despite all evidence indicating that green steel is imperative to meeting our climate goals, securing a just transition and protecting jobs in this country.

Spiking energy prices are causing concern and difficulties in nearly every industry as well as for household bills, yet the Prime Minister did not bring any solutions to this growing crisis.

We would say to Boris Johnson that if you do not want to be a joke of a Prime Minister, ditch the jokes and focus more on the issues facing our country and working people.”
