Community signs recognition agreement with Ramblers

The trade union Community has today announced that they have signed a recognition agreement with the Ramblers, Britain’s leading walking charity.

The recognition agreement will now allow Community to negotiate on pay, holidays and hours as well as providing assistance and services to their members.  There will also be consultation on a wide range of additional issues.

Adrian Axtell, National Officer at Community, said:

“Community is delighted that we have now formalised our partnership with the Ramblers.

One of the key values of the Ramblers is empowerment. Bosses who want to empower their people encourage their employees to unionise. It makes for a happier workforce and enables them to retain key experience and expertise to the long-term benefit of the organisation. We’re very happy that a charity so beloved by many and that has such a large impact on British society has decided to join with us.

We’re proud to now be the recognised union of the Ramblers. The last year and a half have highlighted more than ever the vital importance of enjoying outdoor spaces, and we are excited to be working with the Ramblers in a positive and productive way to achieve the best outcomes for worker and charity.”

James Austin, the Community representative from the Ramblers says:

‘It is fantastic that the Ramblers has formalised it’s partnership with Community as the organisation’s recognised Trade Union. The support provided by Community over the past year has been great and we really look forward to continuing within the Union.

The Ramblers has a long history of links with the organised Labour movement and as a Unionised workplace. Since the Kinder Scout Trespass we’ve worked to open the outdoors to everyone and to ensure that the countryside is a common treasury for all.  I’m delighted that we’ll be able work with Community to help achieve these goals and ensure that the Ramblers continues to be a brilliant workplace.”

The Ramblers is a registered charity and has over 100,000 members and a network of volunteers who maintain and protect the path network, leading local group walks and campaign locally and nationally for walkers’ rights.

The Ramblers supports people of all ages and backgrounds, so they can experience the great outdoors on foot, resulting in improvements in health, wellbeing and happiness.

Louise Berry, Interim OD/HRD, says:

“As an organisation we recognise that we can never stand still if we want to make steps forward to continue to grow the Ramblers, to make it more relevant, inclusive and continue to be at the heart of walking.  Our partnership with Community comes at an exciting time, as we continue to work together with all our stakeholders and focus on the key priorties for the Ramblers both now and long into the future.”
