Backing for free school meals campaign

Voice – the education section of Community Union – supports the campaign to provide free school meals during school holidays and for children who are isolating.

Assistant General Secretary (Voice Community) Deborah Lawson said:

“Voice Community  welcomed the Department for Education’s decision to fund free school meals in England over the summer holidays, the Welsh Government’s pledge to provide free school meals during the holidays until Easter next year, and funding for free school meals during school holidays in Scotland.

“Now it’s time for England to follow the example of Wales and Scotland.

“It is vital that children who receive free school meals should be able to continue to benefit from this support, regardless of whether they are in school or at home.

“They should not miss out on something that is crucial to their health and wellbeing during the school holidays.

“As Marcus Rashford has so rightly said: ‘If you feed children properly, you increase educational attainment, boost life chances and, therefore, cut costs in the long run’.”
