Community has welcomed the confirmation of funding to deliver a generational package of modernisation for the Welsh rail network, highlighting the opportunities it will provide to the steel sector.
The UK Government has today announced that it will provide funding for seven new stations in Wales: Magor and Undy, Llanwern, Cardiff East, Newport West, Somerton, Cardiff Parkway and Deeside Industrial Park. This will build on the Welsh government’s existing £1.1billion investment in upgrading and electrifying the Core Valley Lines.
Community’s Regional Secretary for Wales, Abbey Gutteridge, said:
“The announcement today shows the benefits of the UK and Welsh Labour governments working together to deliver for the people of Wales. The seven stations we will gain as a result of this new funding commitment – coupled with the Welsh Government’s existing investment in upgrading and electrifying the Core Valley Lines – will make commuting to work far easier for many of our members.
“There will also be a significant boost to the Welsh construction industry, which can benefit our members in the steel sector. By building these vital new stations and track upgrades with steel made in the UK, steelworkers and their communities can take advantage of this investment too.”
Community’s National Secretary for Steel, Paul McKenna, said:
“We welcome this funding commitment, which includes a commitment to new stations that will serve two of our key strategic steel sites in Wales at Llanwern and Shotton.
“Our railways are a vital source for steel procurement, and the new stations funded by the UK and Welsh Labour governments will require a whole host of different steel products. These include everything from structural steel sections, plates and merchant bars for building frames, to the high strength carbon steel needed for railway track.
“Our members in Wales and across the UK have the capability and experience to produce this steel. Domestic manufacturers should be prioritised when procurement decisions are taken so that these projects can bolster our steel communities.”
