Responding to the Department for Education’s announcement of 4% pay rise for teachers, Helen Osgood, Community’s National Officer for Education and Early Years, said:
“We welcome the government accepting the recommended 4% pay rise for teachers as set out by School Teachers’ Review Body. This 4% pay increase – of which 3% will be funded by Government – will make a difference for our members in classrooms across the country. If agreed following the consultation, the pay increase will come into force in September rather than November, providing a boost ahead of the new school term and making it easier for schools to budget.
“Community also welcomes the proposal to change the structure of Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) payments, basing them on proportion of responsibility rather than for contracted hours. This this will make a massive difference, particularly for part-time workers who take on additional responsibility.
“Community has long highlighted that a lack of recognition and reward for teachers was contributing to the recruitment and retention crisis in the sector. After years of that message being ignored by previous governments, we now have a Labour government that is willing to constructively engage with unions, listen to voices from the sector and take action. There is still more to do, but this is a welcome step in the right direction.”
