Teacher Pay Announcement for England

Community welcomes the Government announcement of a 6.5% pay award for teachers and leaders over the next two school years.

Pay award recommendations from the School Teachers’ Review Body have been fully accepted by Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson.

From September 2026, teachers and leaders will receive a pay award of 3.5%, followed by a further 3% increase from September 2027.

Helen Osgood, Director of Operations and National Officer for Education & Early Years, said:

“Community welcomes the long-overdue teacher pay announcement which will see teachers secure a 6.5% uplift to their salary over the next two years.

“On its own, this uplift does not undo the significant real terms loss in earnings many teachers have experienced since 2010; however, it is a very important part of the journey towards pay restoration, which this Government started two years ago.

“Community notes that despite their earlier statements, the Government has committed an additional £700m funding to support the uplift for this year, and £1,115m for 2027-28.

“It is disappointing that the Government has been unable to fully fund the pay award considering the savings that are being made from reductions to employer pension contributions.

“There are some concerns that this may lead to difficult budget decisions, withdrawal of support and even staffing reductions – which shows the importance of school funding.

“While we are pleased that the School Teachers’ Review Body saw fit to make such a significant recommendation, we also wish to see a similar uplift for our support staff members.

“Every education worker deserves fair pay for fair work and it is vital that we recognise the work of the whole school workforce – TAs, HLTAs, and the wider support staff. It takes a team to help every child succeed.

“We would also like to see movement on proper planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) time.”
