Steel minister visit to Sheffield Forgemasters

Steel minister Sarah Jones MP met with Community reps and members on her visit to Sheffield Forgemasters today.

The minister held a roundtable on site ahead of the launch of the government’s national Steel Strategy, due to be published later this spring. She was also given a tour of the steelworks, which it was recently announced will be working with BAE systems on a £61million contract to produce artillery barrel forgings for use by Ukraine’s armed forces.

Speaking after the visit, Community’s Senior Organiser Matt Cooke said:

“It was great to have the minister at Sheffield Forgemasters today, and it’s such a breath of fresh air to have a government which understands the strategic importance of our steel industry and is committed to supporting it.

“Sheffield Forgemasters is a great example of the specialist skill set and experience we have in the UK steel sector – particularly when it comes to providing essential products for our defence sector. In an increasingly unstable world, we need a healthy domestic steel industry for national security.”
