Steel green paper welcomed

The Department for Business and Trade has today launched a new green paper on the steel ahead of the launch of the Steel Strategy later in the spring.

Welcoming the new green paper, Community General Secretary Roy Rickhuss CBE said:

“After a long era of neglect under the previous government, we welcome the government’s firm commitment to our steel industry.

“The new green paper sets out some of the main challenges and opportunities our steel sector will face over the years ahead, posing important questions on how we can secure and boost existing capacity, stimulate demand for UK steel, and deal with longstanding problems like industrial energy prices.

“Sky-high industrial energy costs have been an enormous burden on our steel sector over the course of many years now, and have created a huge disadvantage for UK steel producers looking to compete with counterparts from France, Germany and elsewhere. Action to address this lingering disparity is much-needed.

“The green paper consultation is an important step towards developing the government’s new steel strategy, and we look forward to engaging with the process at every step of the way. We need an industrial strategy with steel at its heart, and we now have a government which is committed to achieving this.”

Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said:

“The new green paper on steel demonstrates that we finally have a government which is willing to get to grips with the many pressing issues our steel sector faces; from electricity prices and procurement to the huge challenges of global overcapacity and decarbonisation.

“The green paper also confirms that ministers now see the steel sector as a focal point for the  delivery of other policy priorities, including the Strategic Defence Review and long-term housing, infrastructure and wider industrial strategies.

“With this ambitious Labour government at the helm, there are huge opportunities available for our steel sector over the years ahead, and we need to make sure that we seize them. As the leading union in the steel sector, we look forward to making a full contribution to the green paper consultation and the vitally important UK Streel Strategy which will follow it.”
