Steel Film Featuring Community Members to be Shown in Cinemas

A film about steel, featuring contributions from Community members, is to be shown in cinemas across England and Wales.

Steel: The Blood Of Us, which is described as a “love letter to the community of Port Talbot”, weaves together the stories and experiences of generations of steelworkers.

The film, directed by Joe Cornick, is part of a UK screening roadshow and will be shown alongside the 1976 documentary, The Face Of Changes, which chronicled the British steel industry as it faced economic recession five decades ago.

The roadshow began on Monday 14th September with a screening at Sheffield Film Festival and there will be further screenings across September and October in Port Talbot, Ebbw Vale, Cardiff, Coleford, Coventry, Redcar, Falmouth and London.

Port Talbot is a town that has been shaped by its steel community and we are proud that our members have made contributions to this important film.

It was the end of an era for British steelmaking when the blast furnaces shut in 2024, but the community it created remained, alongside a renewed fight to ensure access to high-skilled jobs in Port Talbot – namely through the new electric arc furnace project.

Director of Steel: The Blood Of Us, Joe Cornick, said:

“My goal with Steel: The Blood of Us was to capture the true identity of Port Talbot in its final years of traditional steelmaking.

“As a documentarian I felt compelled to immerse myself in the community for over three years, only then could I reveal the enormous love and passion for not only its industrial legacy but the strength these bonds create for their future.

“Something I have never quite found anywhere else. By combining two stylistically very different documentaries and shot half a century apart I hope we’ll offer audiences a unique, thought-provoking and emotional journey to the heart of Britain’s industrial communities.”
