Responding to today’s announcement of a UK-EU trade agreement, Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid, said:
“We welcome the new agreement the UK Government has secured with the EU, following on from the deals struck with the USA and India.
“Today’s agreement represents a good deal for steelworkers. Extending access to EU markets will open up opportunities for British steel producers. Similarly, the decision to link the UK and EU Emissions Trading Systems will bring long-term benefits, and the clarification that UK steelmakers will not be hit by additional costs stemming from the introduction of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism at the end of the year is a real positive.
“These measures have the potential to save the industry tens of million of pounds a year – a significant boost for the sector in challenging times.
“The Labour government has been firm in its commitment to supporting for our steel industry, and today’s announcement is a further evidence that it is delivering with meaningful action.”
