Statement – New SEND Guidance on Inclusion Bases

New guidance on creating dedicated teaching and support spaces for children with SEND has been announced by the Government.

In accordance with the package of advice, every secondary school will eventually have a dedicated space, called an inclusion base, that provides targeted teaching and specialist support to pupils who need it.

These inclusion bases will be run by a qualified teacher and allow access to an adapted curriculum.

The Government proposed significant reforms to the SEND system earlier this year and announced there will be a £4 billion investment into the system over the next three years.

Helen Osgood, Community’s Operations Director and National Secretary for Education and Early Years, said:

“Community welcomes the work being done to address the shortfall of dedicated SEND spaces in schools through the new requirement for inclusion bases.

“Whilst this is a positive move, it will require significant resourcing, specialist staff and time to properly establish and have the hoped for beneficial impact.

“We recognise that the system is not perfect and there is further work to do to ensure pupils with SEND can enjoy a positive experience in education. We will continue to raise any concerns with the DfE.”
