Community Union’s Support Centre in Port Talbot has marked Mental Health Awareness Week with a wellbeing coffee and support session.
The centre, located at Aberafan Shopping Centre, delivers training and employment support for steelworkers affected by the closure of the blast furnaces at Tata Steel in 2024.
The job cuts were devastating for the workforce but the recent wellbeing session helped to create a relaxed welcoming space where people could take time out of their day to connect with others and have encouraging conversations.
Mental Health Awareness Week is a national campaign that takes place every year in May and the theme this year is action.

Community Union Project Worker Chay-Li Thomas Said:
“Sometimes something as simple as sitting down with a cuppa and having a chat can make a real difference, helping people feel more supported, less isolated, and able to talk more openly.
“The session was a staff wellbeing event with local participants from the Port Talbot area, rather than union members specifically, and it was really positive to see people taking the opportunity to pause, connect and reflect.
“It also highlighted the importance of having local, accessible community spaces where wellbeing can be prioritised in a simple and supportive way.”
