New NAO report on drug harms in prisons

Responding to the National Audit Office’s new report on tackling drugs harms in prisons, Community’s National Secretary for the Justice and Custodial Sector Gavin Miller said:

“The NAO report highlights the legacy of the previous Conservative government’s 14 years of underinvestment in the prison service, and rightly  identifies the need for closer collaboration between our prisons and the NHS on tackling substance misuse.

“In many of the prisons our members work in across the private sector, a great deal of good work has been taking place on prevention and rehabilitation. It is important that HMPPS learns from best practice and invests in the workforce, who are the ones expected to deliver these services. Recruitment and retention has been a longstanding issue in the sector, and we need to ensure that vital skills and experience are not lost.

“The vital point to takeaway from this report is that Health and Safety must be the first priority for employers in the criminal justice sector, tackling substance misuse is a huge challenge for our members and support in this area is much needed and very welcome.”
