Community General Secretary Roy Rickhuss has hailed the beginning of a new era for working people following a landmark meeting in Downing Street today.
Roy Rickhuss joined fellow Labour-affiliated union leaders for a meeting with the Labour Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister this afternoon. At the Downing Street meeting, the Prime Minister reiterated the Labour Government’s commitment to enshrining the New Deal for Working People in legislation. This would include laws to ban exploitative zero hour contracts, end unfair practices like fire and rehire, and introduce basic rights to all workers from day one of their employment.
Community General Secretary Roy Rickhuss said:
“Today’s meeting with the Prime Minister in Downing Street reaffirmed that after 14 long years of Tory neglect, we now have a Labour government which is firmly on the side of working people across the UK.
“There was a clear recognition from the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister today that British workers have had to contend with the scourges of stagnant pay and insecure work for far too long, and that the time has come for an ambitious policy approach to deliver sustained economic growth and improve the lives of working people.
“That is exactly what the New Deal for Working People proposes, and there was unanimous agreement around the table today that the trade union movement will work with the Labour government to deliver that positive programme for change.”
