MP and Council Leader meet with Community Reps at Llanwern Steelworks

Dame Jessica Morden MP and leader of Newport City Council, Cllr Dimitri Batrouni, visited Llanwern Steelworks last week to meet with Community representatives and staff from our regional office.

The political leaders and union reps discussed the current state of the industry, as well as Llanwern’s pickle line, which has increased its output after the Port Talbot Steelworks fire caused significant damage to a critical processing line in June.

Community’s representatives shared their perspective on issues facing the industry and how the Government can support the steel industry by highlighting concerns including tariffs and energy prices.

Organiser for Wales, Poppy Stowell-Evans, said: “We had some really valuable conversations with Jessica Morden and Dimitri Batrouni during their recent visit to Llanwern Steelworks.

“We used this opportunity to highlight the sentiments of our members and to emphasise how crucial the steel industry is to South Wales.

“The industry faces complex issues, but Jessica and Dimitri have both shown a continued commitment to protecting it.”

In July, Newport East MP Jessica Morden attended our Biennial Delegate Conference and told members she will “never stop fighting alongside you for the steel industry.”

As a union, Community has fought alongside steelworkers for more than 100 years. We are the leading trade union for the UK steel industry, proudly representing thousands of steelworkers across the country, notably at British Steel, Celsa Steel, Liberty Steel and Tata Steel, which operates several other sites alongside the ones in Port Talbot and Llanwern.

Community is the steelworkers’ union. More steelworkers are members of Community than any other union. At Community, we are committed to fighting for a just transition that sees steelworkers and the UK steel industry thrive.
