Responding to new government guidance recommending a ban on mobile phone use in schools in England through the school day, Community’s Head of Education Policy Martin Hodge said:
“Mobile phones should not be used by pupils in classrooms and mobile phones should not be used for personal reasons by staff in pupil areas
“But it is important to get the balance right. Schools already use lots of technology and part of that is teaching pupils to use it appropriately – the same applies to mobile phones. That’s why we have always supported schools to set their own policy around possession of phones on school premises.
“We are clear that using the inspectorate to monitor school policy around phones is unlikely to be accepted by the profession.
“We will be responding to the Government consultation on social media once it has launched.”
