Responding to the Prime Minister’s statement on defence and security today, Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said:
“In an increasingly volatile world, the Prime Minister’s announcement of an historic increase in defence spending is timely.
“This spending boost has the potential to stimulate economic growth across the country, including in our steel sector which must be at the heart of the revival of our industrial base.
“History has shown us that appeasement does not work, and Labour has always been the party of defence and national security.
“Now more than ever, we need a strong domestic steel industry for our defence, for our security, for our nation.”
