Community welcomes the publication of the Government’s revised Public Procurement Notice (PPN) for steel.
A new ‘comply or explain’ requirement has been introduced, actively encouraging contracting authorities to use UK-produced steel in public projects and improving transparency over decisions to use alternative sources.
Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said:
“Community has long called for a comprehensive procurement strategy that benefits UK steelworkers, so it is positive to see the Government has introduced a new ‘comply or explain’ requirement in its PPN for steel.
“Greater transparency and stronger expectations on contracting authorities to use UK-produced steel will go some way in protecting our domestic industry.
“When taxpayers’ money is being spent on major national infrastructure projects it makes sense to boost the economy by backing UK-made steel.”
