Community signs recognition agreement with Macmillan Cancer Support

We are proud to announce that Community have officially signed a recognition agreement with Macmillan Cancer Support. This agreement is more than just a piece of paper — it is a legal gateway that gives Community members at Macmillan a voice and a seat at the negotiating table.

While Macmillan’s dedicated employees provide vital care, as well as a lifeline for those living with cancer, Community is proud to stand by them to ensure they have the support, protection and voice they deserve in the workplace.

David Weeks, National Secretary at Community said:

This recognition agreement with Macmillan Cancer Support marks a really positive step forward.  We’re delighted to be working in partnership to ensure Macmillan staff have a strong, collective voice at work.  This agreement reflects a shared commitment to fairness, respect and meaningful engagement.  It also complements our growing work across the charity sector, where we are proud to support organisations and their staff in building positive, collaborative workplace relationships.

What this agreement means for Community members at Macmillan Cancer Support

With this recognition agreement in place, Community is officially recognised to negotiate for our members on behalf of pay, working hours, policy and leave.

Macmillan must now consult with Community on any workplace matters, such as collective redundancies or TUPE transfers, as well health and safety and changes to policy.

In addition, Community Representatives will be appointed on-site to champion our members’ workplace rights, health and safety, equality and learning.

Francesca Okosi, Chief People and Culture Officer at Macmillan Cancer Support said:

“Colleagues voted for this innovative approach because it brings together the best of two worlds: Our Voice, our staff council, and Community Union working side by side. Our Voice knows Macmillan from the inside, how things really land for colleagues day to day, and Community brings wider experience from across workplaces. Together, this strengthens colleague voice, helps us resolve issues earlier, and supports our ambition to make Macmillan the best place to work for everyone supporting people living with cancer.”

Following Macmillan’s core values, we look forward to collaborating with honesty, integrity and trust to further our members’ rights.
