Responding to reports that BP has chosen to use Chinese steel for the Net Zero Teesside project, Alasdair McDiarmid, Assistant General Secretary of Community Union, said:
“It is extremely disappointing that a major UK-backed project like Net Zero Teesside has chosen to source steel from overseas rather than backing British producers and the skilled workers they employ. Domestic steelmakers support thousands of high-quality jobs in communities across the country and are fully capable of supplying the steel required, yet once again they have been overlooked.
“Projects that benefit from public investment should prioritise British suppliers and support the British workforce. If we are serious about strengthening our industrial base, revitalising local economies across the nation and championing secure, quality employment in every region, then procurement decisions must reflect those ambitions in practice.”
