Community welcomes the UK Government’s commitment to action to improve standards across HM Prison and Probation Service following Jennifer Rademaker’s report into bullying, harassment and discrimination across HMPPS.
The government has agreed to the 12 recommendations contained in the report, including the creation of an independent unite outside of HMPPS management structure for reporting, investigating and taking decisions on complaints.
Community’s National Secretary for the Justice and Custodial Sector, Gavin Miller, said:
“The fact that one in eight staff in HMPPS report being bullied, harassed or discriminated against shows that something needs to change. We welcome the government’s swift course of action to establish an independent unit to respond to allegations when they are reported, as well as the MOJ’s wider commitment to further action to improve retention rates and staff morale.
“After 14 years of neglect and harmful cuts under the previous Conservative government, we now have a Labour government which is serious about modernising our prison service and delivering a better work environment for the justice and custodial staff who keep the public safe.”
