Business Secretary in Scunthorpe

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds was in Scunthorpe today to meet with British Steel workers and tour the site. The visit comes days after the Secretary of State moved swiftly to pass the Steel Industry (Special Measures) Act, and on the day that the government secured a supply of raw materials to keep the blast furnaces running on site.

Community’s National Secretary for Steel Alun Davies said:

“It was great to welcome the Business Secretary to Scunthorpe today, and it gave our members at the works a chance to thank him and his officials for all their diligent work in securing a future for Scunthorpe – including through ensuring the supply of raw materials to keep the blast furnaces running. There is absolutely no doubt that without the government’s decisive interventions over recent days we would have been facing a disastrous cliff-edge.

“The Business Secretary made clear again today that the government is firmly committed to British Steel and the wider UK steel industry, and is determined to seize the opportunities available to the sector over the years ahead. We are grateful for his ambition, and for his support, and the steel unions will continue to work with the government on securing the continued operation of the blast furnaces and delivering a brighter future for British Steel.”
