British Steel Welcomes 70 New Apprentices and Graduates

Community is delighted that British Steel is welcoming 70 new apprentices and graduates as part of its plans to create a safer, stronger, more sustainable future for the industry.

For the first time since 2022, 16 graduates will join British Steel following the relaunch of the company’s graduate recruitment programme.

There will also be 36 electrical, mechanical, and structural apprentices launching their careers with the business at the Scunthorpe site in September.

At the same time, 17 apprentices will begin work in similar roles at British Steel’s Northern mills in Teesside and Skinningrove, with one person working at the company’s research and development centre in Sheffield.

British Steel was nationalised in July following years of uncertainty around the future of the UK’s remaining primary steelmaking site in Scunthorpe.

Community backed the Steel Industry (Nationalisation) Bill as Britain’s economic future, defence capabilities and environmental ambitions are inextricably tied to the fortunes of our steel industry, and the future of the two remaining UK blast furnaces.

Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said:

“This is a welcome announcement and is evidence of the bright future for steel manufacturing in Scunthorpe.

“Building a strong steel industry is key to opening opportunities in areas that need them most. The steel industry has always been a route for young people into skills training and a well-paid job and companies like British Steel provides opportunities in regional areas, meaning workers do not have to abandon their local community or family.”
