Why your workplace needs a Union Learning Rep (ULR)

As part of my work facilitating and co-ordinating learning in the England region, I often see people view trade unionism through a traditional lens, focusing solely on negotiations, grievances and collective bargaining.

While those protections are the fundamental aspects of what we do at Community Union, I am equally committed to ensuring our members are equipped for the future. This is exactly where the Union Learning Rep (ULR) comes in, and why I am looking for more of you to join us.

Why I believe your workplace needs a Union Learning Rep (ULR)

The modern workplace is moving at rapid speed. To keep up, we need ULRs who are true peers, people on the shop floor or in the office who understand the day-to-day struggles of their colleagues.

In my experience, a ULR is the essential bridge between where a member is now and where they want to be. When you step into this role, you help provide:

  • Bespoke Upskilling: You’ll help members access everything from IT basics and AI literacy to mental health awareness and even professional qualifications.
  • Low-Pressure Learning: You offer something management often can’t i.e. confidential, judgment-free advice. You bring the training to the members at their own pace and their own time.
  • More Than a Job: I’ve seen how upskilling builds incredible confidence. You help colleagues realize they aren’t just a number on a payroll; they are professionals with real options.

Hear from the frontline: What Our Union Learning Reps (ULRs) are saying

I’m lucky enough to work with some incredible people already. Here is what two of our ULRs, Lorraine and Snezana, told me about their journey as ULRs:

Snezana Stepanova, Union Learning Rep at GXO Doncaster said:

“Being a ULR at Community has brought me many opportunities and led me to meet people from a variety of backgrounds I wouldn’t otherwise interact with. It made me realize just how important a small nudge and encouragement can be, especially for the older folk in my workplace.” Snezana Stepanova, GXO Doncaster, ULR.

Lorraine Jakeman, Union Learning Rep at Sodexo Justice Services said:

“It’s a fantastic experience that truly makes a difference. Many workers are hesitant to pursue training, but as a ULR, you provide that bridge of support and information that makes learning accessible.”

Union Learning Reps (ULRs) shape the future and enhance wellbeing

I truly believe that professional development is the cornerstone of workplace wellbeing; engaging with new skills is a proven method for reducing stress; as it ultimately boosts self-esteem; and increasing overall job satisfaction.

As a ULR, you don’t just open a door to a course; you foster a culture of opportunity. You help transform your workplace from just a place of work into a space for personal achievement.

Ready to Make a Difference? Become a Union Learning Rep (ULR) today

You don’t need to be an expert to be a ULR. We’re looking for people who are simply passionate about seeing their colleagues succeed. It is one of the most rewarding roles you can hold in Community. You won’t just be representing your co-workers; you’ll be helping them transform their lives.
