Across the UK, our schools are filled with dedicated individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes, providing invaluable support to both students and teachers – they are Teaching Assistants.
This National Teaching Assistants’ Day is our opportunity to shine a light on the brilliant work that teaching assistants do.
They are truly the unsung heroes of our classrooms – they are the extra pair of hands, a calming presence and a source of consistent support that makes a world of difference in everyday school life.
The role that each teaching assistant takes is incredibly diverse and demanding, requiring a unique blend of patience, empathy and insight into the world of education. Teaching assistants’ days typically include:
- Working one-on-one with specific students, or small groups of students to reinforce learning, explain complex concepts and to help students’ grasp new skills.
- Bridging gaps to ensure no child is left behind
- Offering guidance and encouragement to help children navigate social situations while fostering a positive attitude toward education and learning, especially to students who need a little extra support or a listening ear
- Being there for children experiencing anxiety, sadness or frustration
- Providing comfort and creating a safe space for children who experience anxiety, sadness, frustration or ill mental health
- Preparing resources, setting up learning stations and managing classroom materials to ensure lessons run as smoothly as possible
It is precisely this skill set that helps our classrooms run smoothly and effectively, freeing up teachers to focus on delivering lessons.
