Why Every Workplace Needs a Union Learning Rep (ULR)

As a Project Co-ordinator working with ULRs, I’m often asked: What exactly is a Union Learning Representative (ULR)?

The answer is simple, a ULR is a fellow member trained to help you grow. They aren’t teachers and nor they are experts; they are fellow workers of the workplace who you can confide in and share thoughts of progression with. They bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be by signposting you to the right courses, whether that’s through our Community Learn platform, online platforms like Staff Skills Training, specialized initiatives like the Google Career Certificates or even by offering bespoke support.

It is easy to only focus on the training your employer requires for your current role. But as one of our ULRs, Rohan Steele (AA), rightly says:

“It is too late to prepare when opportunity knocks.”

ULRs are vital because they help members “future-proof” themselves. They ensure that when a promotion or a new career path opens up, you already have the prerequisite skills to take it.

For a ULR like Rohan, the role is about more than just paperwork, it’s about fulfilment. He notes that talking to both members and non-members about acquiring new knowledge is incredibly rewarding. There is a unique satisfaction in seeing a colleague

Ultimately, for our union, ULRs are a powerful recruitment tool. They show that we aren’t just here for grievances or pay disputes, we are here for your lifelong learning. We believe in investing in you, not just for the job you have today, but for the person you want to become tomorrow.

Ready to help others grow? Become a ULR today!

Being a ULR is about more than signposting colleagues to training — it’s about the fulfilment of helping your fellow workers “future-proof” their lives. It is a powerful way to show that Community is about more than just grievances; we are about lifelong learning and investing in the people our members want to become.

If you want a rewarding role that helps colleagues unlock their potential and strengthens our workplace community, get in touch today to start your journey as a Union Learning Rep.
