With Liz Truss now confirmed as the next Prime Minister, it is vital that she immediately deals with the several major crises currently facing the country. The cost-of-living crisis is threatening an incredibly bleak winter for millions of people across the UK, and support is urgently needed to prevent people losing their homes or having to choose between eating or heating their homes. 95% of Community members alone can’t afford their energy bills next month. Businesses and industry too are at risk and need intervention to protect jobs, avoid closures and bankruptcies.
It is crucial now that the Prime Minister chooses her priorities correctly: dealing with the cost-of-living crisis, protecting workers and jobs, and supporting businesses. We note that whilst the Prime Minister won a majority of the votes, the number of votes from eligible members she received is lower than what would be required to take industrial action. If the rumours of attacks on workers’ rights or trade unions turn out to be true, it is something we will not stand for.
