To Rishi and Liz – is anyone there?

By now, you’ll have seen the headlines about Tata Steel.

Last week Tata Group, the owner of the Port Talbot steelworks, warned that sites could be shut without subsidies for reducing carbon emissions. We are clear:

Tata and the Government must do whatever it takes to secure the future of steelmaking at Port Talbot, and work with the trade unions to safeguard our vital strategic industry.

As one of only two people who could be our next Prime Minister, this isn’t just something that will be first in your in-tray, it’s already there.

We get that the Conservative Party have got a lot going on at the moment, but this is serious, and needs the commitment of both our next Prime Minister and Tata to resolve.

If Britain is going to compete on the world stage over the years ahead, then we must also invest in our steel industry. For many of us this seems a no-brainer, but your lack of engagement suggests you need to be convinced.

Port Talbot is the biggest steelworks in the country. It employs over 4,000 people, and supports thousands more jobs in the supply chain and steel communities

It is not an exaggeration to say the loss of Port Talbot would be devastating for our industry, for our economy, and for our country, Learning lessons from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, it should be crystal clear we cannot rely on overseas supply chains for vital strategic resources.

That’s why we’re asking you – are you going to let this happen? Or are you going to stop arguing with each other about suits and earrings for five minutes to stand up for British workers and British industry?

We urgently need you to:

  • Pledge your commitment to securing the future of Britain’s steel industry
  • Commit to engaging with Tata and the unions to protect steel jobs across the country
  • Work with the sector to ensure we can make the steels we need here in Britain
