Today (1st October) Tata Steel began the process of separating their European operations into two separate businesses – Tata Steel UK and Tata Steel Netherlands. This followed the conclusion of a consultation process with the trade unions.
On the separation, Roy Rickhuss CBE, General Secretary of Community, said:
“This separation is a major turning point for Tata Steel UK as it follows more than 20 years of continuous integration of the European operations. We now have a golden opportunity to build a prosperous great British business, one which will be a foundation of our economy and support thousands of steel jobs for generations to come.
But if we are to succeed we must commit to a long-term decarbonisation strategy that will secure the future of British steelmaking. We cannot continue to kick the can down the road, because our European competitors are way ahead of us on the pathway to producing green steel. Steelworkers are looking to the Government to demonstrate real climate leadership, by delivering for our industry in this year of COP26.”
