Today the Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered her spring statement from the Government despatch box. The Labour Party inherited a dire economic situation, with a black hole in our economy and successive Tory and coalition governments letting our industry drift with no strategic vision for the future.
The National Planning Policy Framework will help to provide the reforms to deliver the 1.5m homes so sorely needed in our society. This is something that Community wholeheartedly supports, with our Biennial Delegate Conference last year raising the specific need for more housing for young people
The Government’s aspiration to make the UK a Defence Industrial Superpower is a strong, ambitious vision for our economy. But this can’t be achieved without the foundations of a strong steel industry. As an example, Scunthorpe and Dalzell can make and cut the steel to build the ships that protect our shores. If the Government seeks to make the UK into a Defence Industrial Superpower then it must seize the opportunities available to our steel sector as laid out in our Steel Reforged report.
There is still more to be done. As a nation we need to tackle the issues of infrastructure, energy prices, and ensuring that we have an economy that works for all. But today’s spring statement by the Chancellor shows the hard work that this Labour Government has already done to get our economy back on track.
Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said
“Today’s spring statement by the Chancellor reflects the ambition of this Labour Government, and we welcome the additional investment into our nation’s defence. It’s right that the UK Government should have an ambitious vision for our defence industry, but it’s also important the Government recognises that to achieve this vision we must have a strong steel industry as it’s foundation.
“Wages and living standards are vital metrics for our members in every sector. We look forward to this Government’s Plan for Growth making a real difference to their lives and for all working people across the UK.”
