Securing a pension win

Our dedicated team of trained, specialist advisors at our Service Centre have decades of experiences supporting our members through difficult circumstances at work. We continue to be in our members corner as the cost-of-living crisis bites.

Earlier this year, one of our members got in touch as she was worried that her Teachers’ Pension statement had service on it for employment in an Authority where she had never worked.

As she was nearing retirement, she wanted this service removing from her record to avoid any risk of Teachers’ Pensions chasing her in the future for an overpayment of pension she would not have been entitled to.

The member had repeatedly been in touch with Teachers’ Pensions about the issue, but their stance is that service details can only be amended by the employer and she was getting nowhere. Teachers’ Pensions were insistent that only the Authority that was incorrectly recorded could request Teachers’ Pensions remove the service, despite the member never having worked at that Authority.

The member had spent more than a year trying to resolve the situation herself when she contacted us.

Our service centre took on the case, and through their actions by the end of June the error had been rectified, and the member confirmed her pension record no longer showed service for this Authority.

Janine Sansom, Technical Officer for Pensions, says:

“It is important for members to check their pensionable service record regularly and flag up any errors as soon as possible to avoid problems later. This was an unusual problem with the member’s record, which I was happy to help with and was pleased to get a speedy and successful resolution.”
