Community was sad to learn about the death of Joy Rowley over the weekend.
A fighter for justice and friend to all, Joy was a vital and unwavering voice for women within our union.
She proudly served in a women’s seat on Community’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and progressed establishment and trust in our Equality Committee. She also held seats on the Education Sector Committee and the Health and Safety Committee.

A familiar and respected presence at trade union equality conferences, education conferences and committee meetings, she worked tirelessly to build connections across trade unions, twice earning nominations for a place on the TUC Women’s Committee.
Though she narrowly missed election, by only a handful of votes, her near success this past March spoke volumes about the deepening strength of her relationships, her determination, and the respect she commanded across the union movement.
Quietly fierce in her advocacy, Joy championed women’s rights with unwavering conviction. A gifted writer, she expressed her passion and purpose most powerfully through her words. With clear, thoughtful, and often engaging communications and reports bringing important issues to life.
Joy never used ten words when she could use a hundred, and we are all the better informed for it. Her reports and communications were as thorough as they were compelling, and you always came away knowing exactly where she stood.

Joy embodied the true spirit of trade unionism – solidarity, courage, and service. Her contribution to education, as well as health and safety, strengthened protections, raised standards, and gave voice to those who needed representation. Her determination helped create safer workplaces and better opportunities for many.
She laughed often, especially when she found herself “volunteered” for yet another task. This is something that happened frequently, simply because everyone knew how capable she was. She took it all in good humour, meeting each new demand with the same quiet determination and good grace.
Joy was funny, kind, and deeply respected by everyone at Community. Something of a dark horse, she revealed her depth gradually, but once known, it was impossible not to recognise the generosity of her spirit and the goodness at her core.
She leaves behind a lasting legacy of integrity, dedication, and quiet strength. She will be deeply and sadly missed.
