Prime Minister’s resignation – statement

On Monday morning Sir Keir Starmer announced he would be stepping down as Prime Minister, a role he has held since 2024.

Under his leadership the Labour Party have passed highly important legislation, namely the Employment Rights Act 2025, which was the most significant overhaul of UK employment law in a generation.

Community General Secretary Roy Rickhuss CBE said:

“Sir Keir Starmer has shown support for workers throughout his tenure as Prime Minister and this will not be forgotten.

“Most notably he pushed through legislation on workers’ rights that will enhance the lives of working people, modernise industrial relations for the rapidly changing world of work and hold bad employers to account.

“His mantra to put country first secured a phenomenal electoral victory and is why even his fiercest political opponents recognise his qualities as a great statesman.

“Community will continue to play its role as an affiliated union to the party in the selection of a new leader under the timetable set out by the National Executive Committee.

“We look forward to working with the next Prime Minister to continue to deliver for workers across the economy.”
