Community has backed the government’s plan to fix England’s damaged roads.
New analysis from the Labour party shows that between 2022 and 2024 around 2,500 miles of A roads, B roads and C roads fell out of the top category for road condition – the equivalent to the entire length of Route 66 between America’s Midwest and the Pacific Coast in California.
Similarly, under the previous Conservative government, the number of pothole-related incidents also soared, with 3.5 million incidents reported between 2018 and 2023. As a result, drivers were forced to spend £10billion on vehicle repairs directly attributed to pothole damage.
In last week’s budget, the Labour government announced the largest ever investment in road maintenance in England – £7.3billion – building on its commitment to fix an extra million potholes a year by the end of this Parliament
Paul Warren, Community’s National Secretary for the Logistics sector, said:
“Our members in the logistics sector – particularly lorry, truck and tanker drivers, delivery drivers, and roadside patrols and technicians – can attest to the poor state the previous Conservative government left our roads in.
“There’s sometimes an unhelpful tendency to dismiss complaints about pot holes as localised grumbling, but the reality is that they are a real safety concern and a significant cost burden on those of us who make a living on Britain’s roads.
“We welcome the fact that we now have a government which takes this issue seriously, and is investing in making our roads smoother and safer.”
