Logistics sector welcomes extension of fuel duty freeze

Community has welcomed Government plans to extend the 5p cut on fuel duty until the end of the year.

The 5p reduction, which was due to be phased out in September, comes as drivers face increasing prices at the pump, caused by the war in Iran.

The reduced rate was originally introduced by the previous Conservative Government in 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sparked a hike in fuel prices. It has been extended on multiple occasions.

The Government has also announced a vehicle tax break, which will reduce prices for hauliers – the people who keeps Britain’s shelves stocked and the economy moving. The 12-month road tax holiday is expected to save hauliers around £600 for a typical heavy lorry.

Paul Warren, Community’s National Secretary for the Logistics sector, said:

“An increase in fuel prices, caused by the Iran war, has led to additional cost-of-living pressures for our members in the logistics sector.

“With this in mind, Community welcomes the Government’s decision to extend the 5p reduction on fuel duty. This is a measure that will provide financial relief for the drivers who help to keep Britain’s economy afloat.

“These latest measures show the Labour Government is endeavouring to ‘protect people at the pump’ in 2026. We now need to keep pushing to ensure the support measures for drivers will be extended into 2027 if the conflict continues.”
