Shadow Steel minister Sarah Jones MP meets with Community Union delegation at Labour conference
Representatives from steelworkers’ union Community met with Shadow Steel Minister Sarah Jones MP at Labour Conference this week to discuss the recent UK Government-Tata deal, and the Labour Party’s plans to support the steel sector if it forms the next government.
Labour has pledged to deliver a long-term plan for Green Steel, including a £3 billion investment through a National Wealth Fund, to achieve near-zero emission steel production by 2035.
Community General Secretary Roy Rickhuss said:
“It was good to meet with Sarah Jones MP at conference and we’ll continue to work closely with the Shadow Minister to secure change to the bad deal for steel that the government have struck with Tata.
“It’s clear an Electric Arc-only approach is short-sighted, and all options should be on the table.
“Labour is the party for steelworkers, and we’ve seen this clearly with the commitments the party has set out for game-changing investment in our industry.”

Community is the steelworkers’ union. More steelworkers are members of Community than any other union. We have a history dating back over a century, representing members and campaigning to protect Britain’s steel industry. We are a modern trade union, campaigning for a better working world.
