Can I join a trade union?

Yes, you have the right to join a trade union, like Community in the UK. This is a fundamental employee right, and your employer cannot penalise you or discriminate against you for it. Whether you’re a full-time employee, a part-time worker, or on a zero-hours contract, you are protected by this right.

Your legal rights to join a union

Under UK law, your employer cannot:

  • Refuse to hire you because you are or aren’t a union member
  • Dismiss you or make you redundant because you are or aren’t a member of a union
  • Mistreat you or discriminate against you for joining or taking part in union activities e.g. denying you a promotion
  • Force you to join or leave your union

You are also free to be a member of multiple trade unions if you want, however you can only seek advice, support and representation from one, should you encounter an issue at work.
