There’s a specific kind of magic in walking into a room and being remembered.
On 12th March 2026, Regional Organiser Sati Bhachu and colleague Alan Duff headed back to Slough for Special Voices Day. It was one of those days that serves as a powerful reminder of why the work of a union like Community is so vital.
Special Voices is a voluntary group of parents and carers of children and young adults with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), and they truly are the heartbeat of the local community. Seeing approximately 50 familiar and new faces including parents, carers, and young adults, all gathered together for one cause.
The day was spent discussing the various benefits Community offers, with a particular focus on Staff Skills Training. For a young adult with SEND entering their first job, or a parent returning to work after a long break, this training is more than just a certificate; it’s a safety net.
The team also provided valuable guidance on essential workplace topics, including:
- Employment rights and protections.
- Flexible working arrangements that support family life.
- Reasonable adjustments to ensure the workplace is accessible for everyone.
Alan Duff, Regional Organiser at Community said:
I found the experience enlightening. Speaking with the volunteers was incredibly insightful, and seeing all the passion and commitment was truly inspiring. It gave me a unique perspective on the challenges and realities of working as volunteers.
Meeting such caring and warm people was very rewarding, and I have the utmost respect for everyone I spoke to. And of course, the tea and biscuits were very welcome!
It was a privilege to share the space with the inspiring team from Together as One. Seeing the work they do with 11–25-year-olds highlights that when grassroots organisations and unions work together, they create a much stronger, more resilient community for everyone.
Plans are already underway for the next session in November. When organisations come together to share knowledge, they aren’t just ticking boxes or offering benefits, they are helping people build the futures they deserve.
