Community is delighted to see that the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has backed the use of two non-invasive diagnostic tests for endometriosis, a condition that can be incredibly debilitating and has few treatment options.
The healthcare guidance recommends Endosure and Endotest, which will be used by the NHS during a three-year period while evidence is collected on how it works.
According to charity Endometriosis UK, it takes 9 years and 4 months to diagnose endometriosis, and the only way to definitively confirm a diagnosis in this country is through laparoscopy, an invasive and highly costly surgery that carries its own surgical risks.
Menstrual and fertility health is not just a workplace issue, it’s a trade union issue, and that’s why we’ve launched our new campaign, Supporting Her Together.
As part of our campaign, we are asking employers to formally sign our Women’s Reproductive Health Charter so women can receive better support in the workplace.
Community’s Head of Equalities Jennifer Dean said:
“No one should have to struggle in silence or fight to have their health taken seriously. Through collective action, unions can help to secure the workplace policies and cultural change needed to better support women experiencing conditions like endometriosis.
“That’s why Community is committed to campaigning for workplaces where women’s health is recognised, understood and properly supported.”
