Community in attendance at Welsh Labour Conference

Community reps and officials were in attendance at Welsh Labour Conference in Llandudno last weekend (27-29 June) – a chance for union affiliates, party members and elected representatives to join together to celebrate Labour’s ongoing achievements for the people of Wales and develop policy for the future.

Community was proud to move a motion on the strategic importance of the steel industry to Wales, receiving the unanimous backing of conference delegates.

Our delegates took part in a range of events and fringes in Llandudno, and were present in the conference hall at Venue Cymru where the Prime Minister, First Minister, Secretary of State for Wales and others delivered speeches addressing the UK and Welsh Labour Government’s ongoing commitment to meaningful investment in Wales after fourteen years of Tory neglect.

There was also a strong focus on next year’s Senedd elections, due to be held on the 7th May 2026. Community will be campaigning hard to ensure that we re-elect a Welsh Labour government – Labour is the only party that will stand up for our members and working people across Wales, whilst a grimy backroom stitch-up between Reform, Plaid and the Tories would be disastrous for the country.

Alun Davies, Community’s National Secretary for Wales and Steel and Metals, said:

“It was a pleasure to be in Llandudno for Welsh Labour Conference this weekend, and our members in attendance left the venue feeling enthused and energised. We heard excellent speeches from the Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the First Minister of Wales Eluned Morgan, and the Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens.

“In her speech, Jo Stevens referenced the hard work Community has done across Wales and for the steel industry in particular, and emphasised how we will be working together to rebuild Port Talbot and Llanwern back better than before, creating jobs and strengthening communities.

“Eluned Morgan spoke passionately about the difference already being made with two Labour governments at both ends of the M4, securing the largest budget in the history of devolution which is bringing down NHS waiting times; building new homes and schools; and delivering more support for childcare to address cost-of-living challenges.

“The First Minister also highlighted her ambition to place Wales at the heart of an AI revolution. We look forward to working with Welsh Government on this plan – at Community we share the same optimism that AI can make jobs more efficient, flexible and rewarding for working people. This is something we have demonstrated through our first-of-its kind AI partnership with Google, which has already delivered successful training sessions at our Community support hub in Port Talbot.

“The Prime Minister’s speech served as a powerful rallying call ahead of next year’s Senedd elections, highlighting how the UK Labour government is delivering for Wales with growth and innovation projects across the nation, trade deals which support Welsh businesses, coal tip safety, and more money for Welsh public services.

“The PM was also right to highlight the danger that Reform poses. Farage and his party are just reheated and more extreme Tories with nothing to offer to the Welsh public – in fact, their unserious plans would cost Wales jobs and investment whilst stoking division in our communities. On top of that, we know that Farage – a man who once boasted that he was ‘keeping the flame of Thatcherism alive’ – wants to replace the NHS with an American-style insurance system, and is hell-bent on doing away with hard-won rights and protections for workers and for women in particular. Farage and his party of clowns are not serious people – but the threat they represent to the Welsh way of life and the values we hold dear here is incredibly serious.

“Following last year’s General Election, Wales is now proudly a Tory-free zone. We can do ourselves proud again next year by giving Farage the boot and re-electing a Welsh Labour Government which will stand with working people in Wales and deliver the investment which our communities need.”

During conference, our NEC member Jacqui Thomas spoke in support of Community’s motion on the strategic importance of the Welsh steel industry.

In her speech, Jacqui Thomas said:

“The UK Government’s steel strategy is something our movement has campaigned for year after year. The plan must not just be a strategy in name, it must be bold, ambitious and a blueprint that protects job, drives green investment and rebuilds the capacity of our steel industry.

“We need a robust, fair CBAM aligned with the EU timetable to level the playing field and support sustainable production.

“Wales needs steel, steel needs Wales.”
